This is a photo of the original New England shirred and hooked rug, circa 1850.
I love cornucopia's! Look closely at the scalloped edged cornucopia's and see all the colors used in them. The flowers spilling out of the cornucopias are a mixture of pastels and bold colors. The dark background sets off the colors. The golden brown in the background could be a faded, hand dyed yarn or the maker ran out of the black and finished with what she had. There is coral colored, inner border lined with an off white line that leads to the outer border of a multi colored tweed.
