This is a photo of the original rug, dated March 1852.
Notice the blocks at the horse's feet with the wording "Hearth RUG," with the "a" hooked backwards. The auction description reads: The gray horse on striated tan ground beside panels inscribed "Hearth Rug" flanked by purple flower pots with rose red floral stems, the wide border with sawtooth and pink flowers alternating with stem of buds, the corners with dates. Do you see this as a horse or a mule? Either way, I love the theme of this early rug! The pattern comes as shown, without the lettering. Please contact me if you want custom lettering.
